Sebring Florida was founded in 1909 by George Sebring. The town has a rich history and originally the only thing here were citrus groves and cattle ranches. The town was built around the historic Sebring circle which now has pieces of the past mixed with present day services. Sebring's economic base is still citrus and agriculture but it has also blossomed as a retirement community because of the cost of housing. The proximity to either coast and the cost of housing make it attractive for retirees. The county has 16 golf courses, 9 of which are located in Sebring.
There are a number of golf course communities in Sebring and Lake Placid. Many beautiful homes have been built on the shores of Lake Jackson which is located within the city limits of Sebring. Lake Jackson is a recreational lake, 3500 acres in size that is ideal for jet skiing, water skiing, sail boating and fishing. Presently there are luxury condominiums being built on the lake which would make a great seasonal vacation home as they will be fully furnished, just bring your clothes.
Highlands County is part of a sand ridge left over from the glacial age making the shores of many of the lakes pure white sand. There is a great variety of housing here. Many people come to vacation in the winter and end up purchasing a villa, home or condo because of our proximity to the attractions in other parts of the state. We are located 90 miles from either coast and only 70 miles from the attractions of Orlando.
So you can see, you can still have the Florida weather and lifestyle without the congestion of the coast.
